Assembled from development commit d5f9c20b94b3. Since 5c29da5: a print() in
@eval, or in any Python a klammer set runs, is a log line -- on the
error stream under the command's name at -v 1, silent otherwise, never
in the document -- and K_log(level, text) is the builtin behind it; a
Python script using the binding keeps its own stdout. Previously such
output was lost, or on a terminal landed in the document.
Assembled from development commit 632297b7657a. Since 1b00738: when something
goes wrong while a klammer is being applied, the report begins with the
line of your document that applied it, then lists the klammers being
applied and where inside the klammer set the fault was raised; the
Python binding's line and column are the application's too. The default
image search path is the document's directory, imgsrc beside it and
../imgsrc, and a not-found report shows exactly those.
Assembled from development commit c3c40f6c8fca. Since 830b193: on Windows the
products carry Windows names (ktext.exe, klammertext.dll, document.dll,
reflect.dll) and the console's output code page is UTF-8 for a run; the
editor tooling works on Windows (VS Code, Sublime Text, Vim, with the
interpreter's name chosen by platform) and Notepad++ joins it
(doc/edit/notepadpp: a User Defined Language and two Run-menu commands);
a sixth install page, doc/install/windows_wsl_install.md, for Linux
inside WSL; the Windows page opens with the three routes and gains its
editor section, the PowerShell quoting and Path notes; the Linux page
installs OpenImageIO from the python3-openimageio package and verifies
with kdiag --machine; the README lists all six install pages. Linux and
macOS behaviour is unchanged.
Assembled from klammertext-dev f344a37d772c. The commands, the library,
the Standard Klammer Set, the reflection klammerset and the Python
binding build and run natively on Windows (MSYS2 UCRT64 gcc, python.org
Python), and both test tiers pass there. doc/install/windows_source_install.md
is the fifth install guide: a source install parallel to the Linux and
macOS ones, verified by following it on a pristine Windows 11.
Behaviour on every system: paths Klammertext prints use forward slashes;
output is LF; the command line is UTF-8 on Windows; @eval :shell is a
POSIX shell command everywhere -- on Windows it runs the sh Klammertext
ships, BusyBox for Windows (win/busybox/, GPLv2, with its licence and the
source pointer). KLAMMERTEXT_FONTS and KLAMMERTEXT_KLAMMERSETS are lists in
the system's PATH convention (';' on Windows). On Linux and macOS nothing
observable changes.
Assembled from klammertext-dev daad6273483a. The font-store listing is
rendered from ref/ (one table per search directory, in search order,
with the styles each typeface holds); the search path is described,
not validated, so a KLAMMERTEXT_FONTS directory that does not exist --
the default ~/.klammertext/fonts on a fresh install -- is a row saying
so and the command exits 0. A typeface an earlier directory also holds
is marked shadowed, with the winning directory, in a column present only
when needed. The store's layout convention has one reader,
fonts_in_directory(). Six kdesc suite cases pin the listing.
Assembled from klammertext-dev e99530408517. The katom rewrite patterns
are rendered from ref/ (a table in dispatch order, patterns through @c),
the procedural listing having left mac/; a plain-text caption's rule is
as long as the table or listing it captions; the editor-support comments
name the tools' new dev/ location.
extended_latin_symbol_pattern() assigned a string literal to a std::string
inside its loop, for which gcc 12 reports a bogus memcpy overlap at -O3. The
separator is a const char* now. No behaviour change.

kdesc --katoms is Klammertext rendered from ref/, the types in titled groups,
with --katoms full for the regex column. @table :leading L is L lines of the
surrounding text in html as in pdf (default 1), and :rulesep spaces the
horizontal rules. The html table has one style attribute, so :column_width
fractions take effect again. @code and @source_listing render in plain
text; captions are numbered per kind there, and a table needs no blank line
around it. @c takes :nd, and an option-shaped word before a bar inside
literal code is code.

Section headings under txt are numbered inside a @document only; @typeface
gains :middle and :lift and its :scale now means the same in html and
pdf; NewGardinerOmni ships (OFL 1.1, Mark-Jan Nederhof) and @egyptian /
@chinese replace @cjk; @table :leading and :colsep reach html; kdesc
--typeface help names the flag; @document.txt is a Python class.

Also: the klammertext argtype (descriptions kept as source), txt table
wrapping and :hpos/:offset, @c between ‹ ›, txt section headings, the
ktext newline-only trim, capitalize(), and the argtype test suite.

Since the previous release: Machine::read_string() (the fs::path/std::string
overload pair split); kdesc -c and -u rendered from the ref/ reflection
klammerset; a fit column's tex width measured in TeX over every entry;
@typeface resolving to the family its css declares (a store directory name
now works in html) and hieroglyphs in @unicode_examples set in their
typeface; the ansi target -- plain text with the type styles a terminal can
show, identical to txt once the escape sequences are stripped -- with the
txt @table carrying :header_style, :style and :hline; @block anchoring,
@table spacing and the Image_quality state variable; and the rewritten
doc/klammertext_for_llm.md.
Assembled from klammertext-dev ed13dfaa5b7a. kpy/klammertext.cpp is a
CPython extension module giving a Python script an instance of the
Machine class -- ktext in-process, set up through the same functions the
command uses. Errors map one-to-one to Python exceptions under the C++
names; an @eval's Python exception is chained as __cause__. Built by
make -C mac, found through PYTHONPATH (env/runtime.env sets it), tested
by tst/kpy_test.sh. Three engine changes came with it: Error::message(),
set_command_state(), and the @eval error report carrying its traceback.

A character written in the ^...^ mnemonic form -- ^oe^, ^zz^, ^hello^ --
used to kill ktext outright: no message, no output, and an exit status
that looked like a crash because it was one. Only the forms that happen
to spell hexadecimal digits escaped, and they were right by luck rather
than by reading. Any caret form that names no character is now a located
error that quotes what was written.
A klammer may now sit inside square brackets and braces as it already
could inside parentheses, and may be followed by the punctuation that
ends a sentence: [@i word@], {@b word@}, @i word@'s. The rule is a fixed
list of characters, because none of them can occur inside a klammer name
and so none of them is ambiguous next to a delimiter. A letter still
cannot: "x@" is the named closing delimiter, so a letter before "@" has
two readings and no rule can separate them.
The abbreviations an author writes -- the hyphen form @i-word, a klammer
glued to its neighbouring punctuation -- are now recognised as author
conveniences only. They are not applied to @@ definitions or @@@ system
commands, which are written by someone who needs no such shorthand and
whose forms are already whole.
Also fixed, each of them silent: an exported shell function in the
environment broke every @eval in the document; a line break written with
@nl was destroyed when it passed through a klammer that generates a
table, printing as \textbackslash{}newline in the finished PDF; and
"kdesc --coverage" shortened its file column by comparing the spelling of
a path rather than the path, so a klammer set reached by a symbolic link
showed a full path where its neighbours showed a short one.
New in the distribution: ref/, a small klammerset that describes the
Klammermachine's own tables in Klammertext. It currently provides the
character tables -- the diacritics and the extended Latin letters -- as
klammers that render to any target, so the documentation of what can be
written cannot drift from what the machine accepts. It is early, and
will grow.
The Klammertext taxonomy now has a section on targets, describes the
@@@klammerset system command alongside the other three, and states the
precedence of "^" -- what a caret means before a letter, a digit, a
punctuation character, and a quote, in one ordered list.
(from dev 6594c7ff8c1f)
A run of Unicode code points now needs one pair of carets, not one pair
each: ^9053 53EF 9053^ renders the characters adjacently, and a single
character inside such a run stands for itself. An invalid code point is
an error naming the position that wrote it, rather than an apology
rendered into the finished document; noncharacters are refused alongside
surrogates; and a code point that lands on a Klammertext special is safe
through the re-reads that assemble a document. The character tables now
produce the precomposed form, so a diacritic written as ^a" and one typed
directly are the same text to a search or a copy-paste.
"kdesc -u" describes how to write a Unicode character, with tables of
glyphs beside the codes that produce them. It is new and not yet
complete: it predates the sequence form and the typeface klammer below.
A typeface and a style are no longer both called "font". A typeface is a
family resolved by name; a style code is the one letter naming a type
style. So @document takes :serif_typeface and its siblings, a table takes
:style, captions take :caption_style and :caption_size, the uniform scale
is :text_scale, and the command is "kdesc --typeface". This renames
arguments a document may already use; an old name is a located error
rather than a silent omission.
@typeface sets a passage in another typeface for the length of that
passage:
@typeface Noto Sans Egyptian Hieroglyphs | ^132AA 133CF^ :scale 1.5 @
Writing the klammer is the whole declaration -- the document resolves the
typeface, embeds it in what it produces, and carries its license along.
Two typefaces for scripts no text font covers now ship with Klammertext:
Noto Sans Egyptian Hieroglyphs and Noto Sans Cuneiform. Every typeface in
the distribution now carries its license file.
(from dev 61e598698891)
Typographic transforms (---, quote pairs, ~) no longer touch verbatim
text: @c/@code/@source_listing content and ^'...'^ spans show exactly the
characters written. "^" before any punctuation character quotes it in
every target (the apostrophe excepted: ^' opens a literal span), with the
new :resolve option on @@@target declaring per-target renderings. The
^UUUU^ code-point form accepts 4-6 hex digits, the full Unicode range.
The html output and transform spellings are polyglot (XML-valid), in
preparation for an EPUB target. New suites: transform_test, character_test
(engine), typography_test (SKS).
(from dev 07ce5ea86a0a)
Three changes.
@c now takes its content literally, like @code -- it is the inline form
and @code the block form of the same thing. The named close "c@" is
required, and characters that are special in a target no longer break
the file: @c a_b c@ renders correctly everywhere. The Markdown
converter stops quoting inline code, since nothing needs protecting.
@source_file is renamed @source_listing. Code read from a file is its
own klammer; @code is only for a block written inline (its never-
implemented :filename and :pattern options are removed). The new
:marker P option lists the region between two lines that are exactly
//P, so the source file declares its own extractable regions. A marker
missing or not appearing exactly twice is an error, never a fallback.
Rendering a document that sits in a large directory was paying a
recursive walk of that directory's whole tree on every @eval -- 27
seconds for a document that renders in a third of one. The walk is now
a non-recursive look decided once per directory.

A snapshot of the development tree. The substantial changes since the last one:
COMMAND OUTPUT POLICY. The three commands display text in exactly three cases,
and each owns a stream: LOGGING under "-v" greater than 0 and an ERROR before
termination go to STDERR; OUTPUT THE USER ASKED FOR goes to STDOUT. For ktext
that output is a document, so "ktext doc.kt -d | ..." is now safe -- logging
used to share the stream and land inside the document. A bare command prints
its usage and succeeds rather than failing. Colour is emitted only to a
terminal, per stream, and NO_COLOR is honoured.
"-v 1" reports every decision whose outcome you could not have read off your own
input: the klammerset that was loaded and from which file, a font's directory, a
":files" name's file, how "-o" was expanded. Higher levels are the trace.
The commands no longer warn and continue: an anomaly is an error, described with
its location. Two exceptions remain, each for a stated reason -- a condition
that is expected and temporary by design, and a judgment that is a heuristic
rather than exact.
@cond IS NOW A TRUE SPECIAL FORM, resolved at APPLICATION time rather than when
the file is read. Two consequences for a writer:
* a state variable reaches the predicate. "@@@state Flag :value true @@@
@cond *Flag* | T | F @" renders "T"; it used to see the literal "*Flag*" and
silently take the false branch. The document now behaves like a klammer
body, whose arguments are bound before its conditionals are decided.
* nothing in a discarded branch happens -- it is not read, not evaluated, not
expanded. An @eval in the branch not taken used to run anyway.
Its predicate relation is total and strict: true, True, 1; false, False, 0, and
empty; anything else is an error at the @cond rather than silently false.
@eval REACHING OUTSIDE. ":shell" and ":haskell" now keep the command's standard
error out of the document (it appears under "-v 1") and treat a nonzero exit as
an error naming what the command reported. A command that exits nonzero on
purpose -- "grep" finding no match -- says so with "|| true".
KLAMMER SETS. Several combine: "--klammersets a b c" loads all three in the
order given, sharing one namespace, with the definition modes deciding
collisions. "none" means none and may not be combined with other symbols. A
klammerset with symbol X is declared in a file X/X.k, which is what lets two
sets require the same third set without loading it twice.
TESTS. Four new suites: the kdiag command's interface, the @eval primitive's
contract with the outside world, and verbosity at both tiers. Three suites
that could not run on macOS at all now do.
Assembled from dev commit 6c8ee6c22fca.
kdesc gains --coverage, which reports for every klammer the set of targets it
can render to, and — the point of it — which klammers' coverage cannot be
derived and must therefore be declared. Three rules: coverage is DERIVED
where the definitions determine it (a general body of klammer calls covers
the intersection of what those klammers cover, by a greatest fixpoint after
loading), DECLARED where the engine cannot interpret what decides it (an
@eval body, whose targets are undecidable), and UNKNOWN where nothing is
written — which never means "deliberately unavailable".
Two new spellings in a definition's name. A comma-separated target list,
"@@table.html,tex :: ...", gives one body several targets; it is surface
syntax, expanded at registration, and each member goes through the
redefinition rules on its own. And "@@date.* :: ..." writes the general
target out, asserting that the klammer works for EVERY target including ones
not yet defined — a stronger claim than a list of the targets defined today,
and the one target declaration that could be mechanically falsified.
The Standard Klammer Set was swept accordingly: it now has no general
definitions at all, every klammer names the targets it serves, six use ".*",
and tex and pdf are at zero undecided.
kdesc's flags are reorganised on two rules: a flag reached for often gets a
single letter (-k klammers, -t targets, -c characters, -i input), a more
specialised topic a multi-letter name (--argtypes, --katoms, --rewrite,
--optionsets, --coverage, --klammerset, --font); and -v says how much to show
about PROCESSING, never what the RESULT contains — so the katom regex column
is "--katoms full" and the coverage detail "--coverage all". NOTE: "-k" now
lists klammers (optionally filtered by a name/description search); the katom
table moved to "--katoms".
Fixes carried along: an option written with no value crashed the command with
SIGSEGV instead of reporting the mistake; two required positional arguments
never parsed; kdesc and kdiag printed an error and exited 0; and definition
diagnostics counted registrations rather than what was written, so one line
could be reported as two definitions and then printed twice.
Four new test suites: target_list, coverage, command_option, kdesc.
(from dev 46f54080bd9a)
A named group of optional parameters, declared once and used by several
klammers, so a writer learns one vocabulary instead of a spelling per
klammer. The "o" target is a pseudo-target beside "k": "k" declares a
klammer's interface and documents it, "o" declares an option interface and
documents it, and neither produces output for any target.
@@caption_args.o :caption :number.bool true :caption_side.side
: Arguments that define a caption for a block element @@
@@code.k :filename @hpos_args :hpos left @ @caption_args :caption_side top @
| text.literal : A source file displayed verbatim @@
A set is used only in the parameter list of a ".k" declaration -- the one
place a klammer's interface is declared once for all of its targets -- and
is resolved as that list is read. Names and types come from the set; a
default may be overridden where it is used. A klammer application in a
parameter list is now a definition-time error.
The SKS gains the sets caption_args and hpos_args (:hpos and :offset), and
@table, @image, @image_grid, @reference and @show gain .k declarations. A
distance is no longer written as a position: :hpos 4em is rejected, and the
same layout is :hpos left :offset 4em. Code listings are numbered by
default, like tables and figures.
New engine sources mac/option_set{,_registry}.{h,cpp}; tst/ ships two more
suites, option_set_test.sh and signature_test.sh (twelve in all).
(from dev 34e536cb0329)
A klammer that reaches itself, directly or through a cycle, expanded
until the C++ stack was exhausted: the process died from SIGSEGV with no
message and no location. The former limit guarded only the top-level
fixed-point iteration, never the descent through klammer application. A
depth guard now raises a recursion error naming the klammer and where it
was applied. The same loop's termination test moves from "the katom list
stopped growing" to "a pass applied no klammer", since a klammer whose
body expands to nothing is a reduction that adds no katoms; exceeding the
round limit is now an error rather than a message followed by rendering a
document with live klammers still in it.
ktext --check locates every klammer application written in a document or
in a klammer body and checks name existence, argument count, option
names, and target coverage without applying anything, reporting all
problems at once. This is possible because Klammertext has no catcodes:
katom structure is fixed when a file is read, so a klammer body has a
determinate shape before it is expanded. The check therefore reaches what
the engine cannot -- the branch of a @cond that is not selected, and
bodies a given render never enters.
@cond's set of truth values is an open language question, so its meaning
is unchanged here; an unrecognized predicate now warns, giving its value
and location.
tst/ gains recursion_test.sh (7 cases) and check_test.sh (19 cases), and
this snapshot's test Makefile is generated from the shipped suite list so
the two cannot drift apart.

The four defaulted parameters in html_util.h stayed by-value while the
definition became const&, leaving the called overload undefined.
Linux's -shared linking hid it (lazy dlopen resolution); it broke the
book-structure HTML path at runtime. Both sides now agree (const&,
defaults kept); combine_files converted consistently as well.
(from dev a910e11431d2)
The @@@klammerset system command formally declares a klammerset — a
named, logically related group of klammer definitions — with an
operative, idempotent declaration (:requires and :files load in order
at the declaration point, relative to the declaring file). A bare
symbol given to ktext -k, kdesc --input, or :requires resolves to
x/x.k on the search path: the document's directory, then
KLAMMERTEXT_KLAMMERSETS, then KLAMMERTEXT_HOME; kdesc --klammerset
lists the available sets. sks/sks.k is the first declared klammerset,
so `-k sks` loads the SKS by name. The engine's lookup classes were
renamed *_set → *_registry to keep the two concepts apart, and the
whole C++ tree now follows standard const-correctness conventions.
tst/ gains klammerset_test.sh (18 cases).
(from dev 64b1abf23e56)
An optional argument has three values: the default (the name is absent),
the argument type's :alone value (the name is written alone), and a
written value.
:alone is declared by the argument type only, never by a klammer's
parameter declaration -- a default is what one klammer means by silence,
but a bare option name must read the same way in every klammer. The bool
type declares :alone true, which is the whole of the convention that a
bare boolean option means true; there is no boolean special case in the
engine. A type whose pattern matches running text cannot declare :alone,
since an option's value runs to the next bar or option name and would
swallow the following text.
kdesc and `ktext -m` now show [default: X] and [alone: Y] per argument
type.
In the Standard Klammer Set: @code :number becomes a bool (it was an
untyped string tested only for truthiness, so a bare :number was a
no-op); decimal_mark declares :alone comma; table_hline and table_vline
declare :alone all. The 35 bools that default false gained the bare form
for free.
Tests: tst/alone_test.sh (21 cases) joins the shipped suite.
(from dev 6024f49c2859)
@date/@datetime gain :lang (German: "16. Juni 1910") over a document-wide
Language state variable, and :number for the numeric form (en 6/16/1910,
de 16.06.1910 per DIN 5008). @eval finds Python modules next to the file
that names them regardless of the cwd, and the new :cwd option runs an
eval in a chosen working directory (@source_file uses it to resolve
against the document). Two new test suites ship in tst/.

- Filenames may contain spaces: quote on the command line; filename
lists use a standalone "/" separator; unseparated names that do not
exist are rejoined into names that do (announced); leading ~ expands.
- Without -o, output is written to the input file's directory; -o fully
specifies the output directory and basename.
- "Word not parsed" warnings now appear without -v, only for text that
survives removal, with correct line numbers.
- New tst/filename_test.sh regression suite.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Quoted Klammertext specials (^@ ^| ^# ^^ ^: ^*) and ^'...'^ regions now
survive re-processing (held as escape markers until final output);
:after_apply phase functions receive and return raw target text.
Tables: :hpos element position (center|left|right|<length>) replaces the
unimplemented :center/:indent; the ranged cell override is renamed
:justify; :column_width works in html (colgroup widths) and gains
'fill' -- the remaining width, capped at the column's widest entry, in
both targets; a table wider than the text column warns on the console;
table edges without an outer line set their text flush on the margins.
@document: no empty title bar for untitled documents; @vfill fills to
the bottom of the window in html (pure CSS); @vspace in plain text;
new @dot klammer; monospace email links.
- @table: a writer's :hline/:vline replaces the default lines; new
boundary name 'none' removes all lines
- @table: ranged :hpos argument overrides :cell_hpos per cell
(\multicolumn{1} in tex; positions a colspan anchor's merged cell)
- @date/@datetime: :days offset argument (sks/date/date.py)
- @document: ":bottom none" suppresses the footer (\pagestyle{empty})
Also carries the escape-system generator/renderer fixes, per-cell-range
:format, and uppercase .TTF/.OTF font recognition from klammertext-dev.
Sync with klammertext-dev through b90b0e09:
- Argument types end to end: :python_cast values are applied (Python
@eval receives real bools/numbers/lists), argument values are
validated against their argtype patterns with the argtype's
description as the error message, argtypes can declare :default
(overridable per declaration), and parameterized type families are
supported: rest(N) casts a rest argument to an N-dimensional list
(bar-count = dimension).
- Unified indexed_range syntax (selector with parenthesized subsets,
composable mnemonic names) for table lines and spans.
- Table klammer: caption fonts fixed in both targets, :column_width /
:leading / :colsep wired, :colspan and :rowspan render (HTML
attributes; \multicolumn / \multirow), calculated cell values (:calc)
with prefix operators, display-precision semantics, :calc_format and
:decimal period|comma.
- Fonts: closed-world resolution on the Klammertext font store
(infrastructure in mac/font_store; no Google Fonts links or fetch).
Default fonts live in the top-level fnt/; additional fonts install
into KLAMMERTEXT_FONTS directories via kdesc --font (list, samples,
preview, install — classification by font metadata). CSS font family
names are quoted (digit-initial families were silently lost).
- Environment files moved from mac/env/ to the top-level env/; shell
profiles source env/runtime.env. Dead per-host variants removed.
- Container: fnt/ ships in the image; curl removed (no network use).
Bare 'make -C com' now builds -O3 (optimize.env default flip); the install guides drop OPTIMIZE=1 and document DEBUG=1 for an AddressSanitizer build.
